India’s eyes snapped open to a near pitch-black room. The hairs on the back of her neck spiked. Was someone else th—

A man’s silhouette rushed into view. She screamed, but pressure, hard and fast, wrapped around her neck, cut her cry short. She pulled at the arms choking her, tried to wrench them away. The man straddled her chest, crushing the breath from her.

She bucked her hips, her legs, frantically clawed and grappled at his hands.

Her blood iced. Her mind blanked. And a punch of desperate energy spiked within her. She opened her mouth to cry out, let the force free, but couldn’t make a sound.

Dark spots—darker than even the room around her—splotched at the edge of her vision. Oh God, this can’t be happening. She gathered all her strength, then pitched onto her side. The roll dislodged the compression at her throat, gave her room enough to draw a panicked breath.

“Bitch,” the man snarled.

She continued rolling, plunged off the bed, and onto the floor. Thuds and thumps echoed through the room as the man tried to catch her.

“Nowhere to hide, bitch,” he called through the darkness.

India scrambled to her feet.

A dark shape rushed at her. She screamed, and the cry hurtled up her throat, echoed into the space. Then the man hit her full on, pushing her backward, bashing her head into the window frame. The curtain dislodged. Weak light from outside spilled into the room.

Harsh breathing grated on her ears, puffs of hot air hit her cheek. Thick arms wound around her torso, moved up toward her neck again.

“Told you. You can’t hide. Not from us.”

India screamed again.

An icy shiver shook her body right before a fresh scent bloomed in the room. Magic.

Within her, something dark twisted hard, fast. Over and over it rolled and churned, and then the twist released like a spring letting go, and a surge of energy hurtled through her. Exploded right as she shoved her arms outwards.

Her magic-enhanced strength broke the attacker’s hold. She rammed her knee up, hard. Her attacker shrieked, shoved her sideways. She bounced off the bed.

And the door burst open.

Splinters of wood sprayed as a massive figure flew into the room. It—he?—rammed into her attacker, then the two bodies crashed into the window, shattering the glass, and tumbled in a tangle of limbs through the opening.

India ran to the window, peered through the dim light to the balcony. Her breathing too fast. Too sharp.

A man turned to face her.

Wild, thick hair shadowed a face with hard planes and a long straight nose. Blades of eyebrows tightened. Dark eyes, afire, met hers. Drew her in, captured her in their glittering heat.

Magic. But nothing like she knew. Magic that enticed, beguiled with a dark dangerous cutting edge. Magic that hit her low in the gut with a fist of lust. She would’ve reeled from the impact but was utterly trapped within that gaze.
